This congregation was founded in 1837 and first met in the Methodist Episcopal Sunday School of New Brighton. The congregation, also known as the First Methodist Episcopal Church, worshiped in several locations in New Brighton over the years, and finally, in 1904, dedicated the current edifice on Sixth Avenue as the First Church of New Brighton.
Due to the merger of three branches of Methodism, this congregation became known in 1939 as the First Methodist Church of New Brighton. It merged in 2007 with the two other Methodist congregations in New Brighton, Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Church, to form the New Brighton Methodist Church. The congregation currently (2026) worships at 1033 Sixth Avenue, New Brighton.
