Description
This 11″ X 17″ atlas contains 49 plates that depict the original land grants that settlers of present-day Allegheny County received from the Commonwealth after William Penn and his descendants vested the land to the legislature issued starting in the late 1780s and early 1790s, which fell into two specific categories: The Treaty of Fort Stanwix (October 1784) and Depreciation Lands (1785–1819): Tracts set aside north and west of the Allegheny River reserved for Revolutionary War soldiers. General Warrants (1787–1840s): Warrants for everyday settlers and pre-emption claims (often to squatters who arrived before 1780) began to be issued in 1787, with heavy distribution following the creation of Allegheny County in 1788. To trace the lineage of a specific tract, researchers can utilize the State Land Records maintained by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. This atlas provides the names, dates, acreages, and township locations. Spiral-bound; soft cover. Published by the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society.
