North Liberty United Presbyterian Church

Record Coverage: 1880–2018

April 11, 1854, petitions were present to Presbytery from Centerville (now Slippery Rock) and North Liberty asking for an organization of a church in each place. Though these two villages are only two and one-half miles apart. Presbytery appointed a committee to organize these churches in the 19th instant if the way is clear. The committee reported at the June meeting of the Presbytery that “They had organized the church at Centerville and the congregation at North Liberty.” This is the last reference of the organization of a congregation in the minutes of the Presbytery. How long this congregational organization continued or how useful it was to the people there is no record.

The North Liberty United Presbyterian Church was organized in 1880 with seventy-four charter members. About one-third of the members came from the mother church of Plain Grove, and others from Centerville (now Slippery Rock) and Center.

The present church building was built in 1880 at a cost of more than $3,000, and was soon dedicated free of debt. The congregation currently (2026) worships in the original church building, at 209 North Liberty-Plaingrove Road.

During the first twenty-five years the church was linked with Centerville in a pastoral charge with the Reverend J. H. Wright as the first pastor. In that time, 365 persons became members of the church.
