Allegheny City was an independent municipality in Pennsylvania from 1788 until Pittsburgh annexed it in 1907. It sat directly north of downtown Pittsburgh, across the Allegheny River, with the Ohio River forming its southwestern border. Laid out in 1788 in a reserve tract for Revolutionary War veterans, it grew from farmland into a major industrial and residential city before Pittsburgh absorbed it. Today, the former city is known as Pittsburgh’s North Side. Softbound, 345 pages.
