The WPGS Library is housed in the Pennsylvania Department of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Main Branch, in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The collection does not circulate.  Our thousands of volumes focus on Western Pennsylvania records, yet extend to nearby areas in Ohio and West Virginia and even beyond. Each year we sort through our collection and weed out duplicates, older editions of current publications, and items that are outdated.  We usually offer these volumes for sale at our annual meeting in June.  However, this sale excludes many members and non-members who are not able to attend that meeting in person.  Our Used Book Sale makes these books accessible to everyone at a reasonable price, plus shipping and handling as indicated, and a 7% tax for Pennsylvania residents.

For your convenience, you can place an order online using  Image result for paypal .  Please follow the instructions carefully so that your transaction is fully documented and credited so that we can get your order to you as soon as possible.  When checking out, you will be asked to confirm a code, click the checkbox to get the code and then retype the code in the box provided. If you do not go through the security step at the bottom, your card will be charged but we will not get a notice of your purchase until our weekly report comes in. NOTE:  There is a base shipping & handling charge of $4.00 per publication for most publications unless otherwise noted.  Pennsylvania residents will have a 7% sales tax added to their PayPal order.

If ordering by mail, download and complete the Printable Order Form for each publication requested, submitting a separate check (payable to WPGS) with each order, so that we can return your payment if the publication has already been sold.   Mail for order form(s) and payment(s) to WPGS Used Books, 116 South 19th Street, Pittsburgh, PA  15203.  Please check the website to be sure the volume you wish to purchase is still available. If you live in PA and you are mailing in the book order, don't forget to add the 7% tax to the subtotal.

00104 Early African American Deaths in The Pittsburgh Courier, Book One 00104 Early African American Deaths in The Pittsburgh Courier, Book One
Compiler: Marlene Garrett Bransom.  This book is a compilation of deaths and obituaries that appeared throughout the Pittsburgh Courier community columns and headlines from March 25, 1911, to December 27, 1912. These deaths represent individuals who lived in the small towns of southwestern Pennsylvania such as Beaver Falls, Belle Vernon, Braddock, Brownsville, Canonsburg, Connellsville, Charleroi, Erie, Greensburg, Homestead, Elizabeth, McKeesport, Monessen, Monongahela, Oil City, Scottdale, Sharon, Sewickley, Uniontown, Washington, and Waynesburg, as well as Pittsburgh; in eastern Ohio, the towns of Akron, Cadiz, Dayton, East Liverpool, Salem, Smithfield, Warren, Wilberforce, Youngstown and Zanesville; in West Virginia, the towns of Huntington and Wheeling. Other towns across the state of Pennsylvania such as Altoona, Harrisburg and Williamsport are also represented as well as Buffalo and Flushing, New York. Many of these deaths are just one line long; however, that one line often contains the name of the dead person, their parent’s name and where and when the deceased died. Many of the deaths that appear in this book are much more detailed describing when and where the deceased was born when they came to a certain area, how long they lived there, whether or not they were a slave, the plantation they came from, and who enslaved them.

This invaluable genealogical data, most likely, is only found in The Pittsburgh Courier. Many of these early settlers were remarkable citizens who established the first churches, schools, and social clubs. They were professional and nonprofessional, skilled and unskilled. They were of all classes and represented a variety of religious affiliations. The beginning of the book contains a listing of all the deaths that are featured in the book and concludes with an every-name index at the end of the book. | 2011 | Paperback | 206 pages

00276 Ever A Frontier, The Bicentennial History of the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary 00276 Ever A Frontier, The Bicentennial History of the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary
James Arthur Walther, Editor.  This is an enthralling and informative chronicle of the development of theological education in the Presbyterian Church and the establishment of the oldest Presbyterian seminary in America. The essays in this bicentennial history describe the religious and political environment in sixteenth-century Scotland that resulted in the formation of the Presbyterian and Reformed churches in colonial American and the establishment of their academies and theological seminaries throughout the East and Midwest. The book features the following: original research on church division in Scotland, including a section dealing with the problem of "witches"; an engaging picture of life on the westward trek - its hardships, methods of travel, home construction, and political problems; detailed histories of the various institutions that eventually united to form the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary; the development of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary's worldwide mission activities, its biblical archaeology program, and its extensive library; nearly three dozen remarkable photos carefully chosen from the seminary's vast archives. 1994.  ISBN 0-8028-3723-9.  282 pages. 00292 Second Stages in Researching Welsh Ancestry 00292 Second Stages in Researching Welsh Ancestry
Edited by John & Sheila Rowlands.  Anyone who has had any success in researching their Welsh ancestry will know that a grasp of specialized Welsh genealogical methods and sources is only one of several factors that contributed to that success. They will know, for example, how important it is in Welsh research to have some understanding of the social, cultural, religious, and economic background of the communities in which those ancestors lived. This book attempts to broaden that understanding, especially for the period prior to 1800 when most researchers begin to experience difficulties. In addition, it aims to make readers more aware of some little-known sources and the special uses that may be applied to the information found in these sources. The book follows the format of the Rowlands' highly successful Welsh Family History and is a compendium of contributions by experts in different fields. Both books have their origins in the residential courses in family history offered at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, since 1986, and, although there is some overlap in the time periods considered within the two books, there is virtually no duplication of content. Apart from chapters dealing with aspects of community life, there are chapters relating to different occupations, surnames, old documents, maps, estate records, and family histories (the Vaughans of Trawsgoed, the Pugh family of Llanfair and Llanbedr, the Lloyds of Ty Newydd, Moris Reignald, Titus Jones, and "Baron" Lewis Owen). The book contains several case studies and is rounded off with examples of work done as part of the accreditation process on some more recent university courses. 00299 William Penn and the Founding of Pennsylvania 1680-1684 00299 William Penn and the Founding of Pennsylvania 1680-1684

by Jean R. Soderlund  | Paperback| Very Good Condition | 432 pages |Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press; 1St Edition edition (June 29, 1983) | ISBN-10: 0812278623

On March 5, 1681, one day after receiving his royal charter for Pennsylvania, William Penn wrote that he believed God would make his colony "the seed of the nation." Penn wanted his Pennsylvania to be a land where people of differing languages and customs could live together, where men and women could worship as they pleased, where men could participate fully in their government. Such a land, Penn believed, would indeed be blessed.

Beginning with his petition to the king in May 1680 and ending with his departure to England in August 1684, this book contains the most important documents describing the founding of Pennsylvania. The letters, orders, petitions, charters, laws, pamphlets, maps, constitutional drafts, legislative journals, newspaper articles, memoranda, deeds, and other business records assembled here include Penn's own explanations of his desire to found a Quaker colony, his invitation to settlers, and his design for government.

00314 Land Causes Accomack County, Virginia 1727-1826 00314 Land Causes Accomack County, Virginia 1727-1826

by Stratton Nottingham | The land records featured in this work are invaluable to anyone interested in Eastern Shore genealogy. The land causes, or chancery suits, for dower, division of lands, and ejectment proceedings for the period 1727-1826 give in full the declaration of the plaintiff, the answer of the defendants, the verdict of the jury, and depositions, which in many cases give the dates of birth, marriage, and death of the parties concerned in the suit. Land is traced from the original patent to about 1825, showing the various owners and their descendants through several generations. The records include those of the district court as well as the county court and name about 4,000 individuals. The abstracts in most cases are the special verdicts of the juries, which sum up and give in concrete form the declarations and answers to the various suits. Other than wills and administrations, these land records are among the very few surviving Accomack County records that document family origins and descents. | Hardcover | 183 pages | Publisher: Genealogical Pub Co; Indexed edition (1999) | ISBN-10: 0806315881 | ISBN-13: 978-0806315881

The top 10 genealogy resource centers in the U.S. are listed first, followed by the locations of the best centers in each state, regional branches of the National Archives, and the vital statistics offices for every state. Over 3,000 genealogy resource centers were personally visited to assemble this choice listing. Based on these surveys and comparisons, the list of 3,000 was condensed to an elite group of about 600 facilities: the very best genealogy resource centers in America! 2017 Note: With the demise of the publisher (Heritage Quest), this book eventually went out of print.
